Police Arrest Leader Of Basque Group Eta

Police and Spanish Civil Guards arrested a leader of the Basque separatist group ETA in a raid Tuesday on a farm in southwestern France.

Julian Atxurra Egurola, considered the ETA’s No. 3 man, is suspected of killing two Spanish policemen and participating in ETA attacks on Civil Guard barracks.

He was believed to be procuring weapons for the militant group, which is waging a guerrilla war for independence for seven Basque provinces in Spain and France.

Authorities arrested Egurola with another member of ETA at a farm outside Pau at the foot of the French Pyrenees.
