Dollar Shrugs Off Early Loss

The dollar recovered from early losses against the Japanese yen and German mark Wednesday with investors gaining confidence in the greenback as the U.S. stock market reversed an early sell-off.

Fading prospects for a hike in Japanese interest rates further helped the dollar. The dollar finished higher against the yen, but could only muster a flat close against the mark.

Anticipating another decline Wednesday, traders dumped dollars before the stock market opened. The Dow immediately dropped more than 70 points, then rallied to recoup the loss before noon.
