Forty-nine of 76 teams advanced past the first weekend of Spokane Valley Girls Softball Tournament.

The double-elimination event began with games on Saturday and will conclude this Saturday and Sunday at East Valley Middle School.

Favored F&F Foundations and Walt’s Mailing played this week for a berth in Saturday’s 16U semifinals. F&F met Discount Garden and Walt’s played Toby’s Auto in winner’s bracket games.

Top-seed Evergreen Physical Therapy was upset 20-12 by Burger King in a first-round 14U West game. Other favorites, Walt’s Mailing, Dakotah and Kwik Kopy all won.

In another shocker, 10th-seed A&L Transmissions beat top-seeded Wise Improvements 16-12 in the 14U East.

Other favorites, Zip’s, Hoffman’s and Spokane Golf Cart all advanced.

In the 12U West Division, top-seed Adept Escrow beat Eagle Mountain Homes 12-1 to move against fourth-seed Lady Trojans, an 18-3 winner over BMC West. Second-seed Stoneway Electric beat Window Products 20-9 and third-seed New Imange Video beat Power Bar 18-2.

Unbeaten E.S.S. won 12-3 to move into the 10U West quarterfinals with Perfection Tire, Budget Car Rental and upset-minded Pioneer Title which gave Sunset Decks its second loss of the season, by an 11-7 score.

Top seed in the 10U East, Stranberg Electric, edged Valley Garbage 7-6 to make the quarterfinals with All Lines Insurance, Award Masters and Leo’s Photography.

Valley baseball to final fours

Spokane Valley Baseball tournaments, which began with 65 teams, have just 12 remaining.

Four teams in each of three leagues are vying to make the finals of their respective playoffs.

Jim Frazier Pro Shop from Mountain View is the Giant tournament’s first finalist after blanking Olympic Sports 14-0 in the league for 13-14 year olds.

Other finalists either were decided in Wednesday night’s Pee Wee League or will be determined in games being played tonight in the Giant and Midget Leagues.

Greenacres Gypsum and Leo’s Photography remained alive in the land of Giants.

National Division third-seed Greenacres broke a 1-1 tie to beat Valley Firefighters 6-1 in eight innings. Leo’s stopped National co-champion Les Schwab Tire 7-2 on Yoshio Packard’s four-hit 12-strikeout effort and two-run hits by Josh Thompson and Jared Vlahovich.

The two met Wednesday with the winner playing Olympic Sports.

Three Norma’s Burger Barn teams are Midget semifinalists after Norma’s Greenacres beat George Velis DDS 8-3, Norma’s Adams beat Ethan Allen 8-7 in eight innings, and Norma’s Otis Orchards beat Norma’s Broadway 11-1. Broadway Eye Care beat Olympic Sports 9-2 in the other quarterfinal game.

Ethan Allen’s Eric Foster extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a double against Valley Kiwanis and Adams’ Devyn Powell hit a grand slam home run in a one-run win over McDonald’s prior to their Tuesday game.

Norma’s James Haile didn’t allow a hit or run while striking out 10 against Tom’s Barber Shop. Landon Beattie went 3-for-3, two of them doubles, to drive in three runs.

Upsets continued to be the norm in the Pee Wee tournament where both division champions were eliminated, and a team that finished eighth in league continues to win.

Svedala’s three victories have been by a total of five runs, but in their wake they’ve left Jim Psomas DDS, which only two games earlier was on target for a division championship.

Most recently the team ousted Godfather’s Pizza 6-5.

Neurosurgery Associates eliminated National Division champion Valley Instant Printing 6-5. Jeremy Kline hit two home runs to drive in five runs and stake the winners to a 5-2 lead.

It took another run to withstand VIP’s sixth inning rally that fell short with runners at third and second bases.

Pitchers on both sides combined to strike out 25 batters.

Spears Used Cars ousted American Division champion Norma’s Burger Barn 12-11.

Dave’s Grill beat Ethan Allen 5-2 for its 11th win in the last 12 games.
