Mike Prager Staff Writer

A North Side man and two teenage girls were detained early Monday after a security guard saw three people lighting fires on the east side of Bemiss Elementary, 2323 E. Bridgeport.

Richard S. Hovey, 119 E. Longfellow was cited for third-degree malicious mischief and released by police.

The two girls, ages 14 and 16, were released to their parents.

Police said they found a spray paint can and graffiti scrawled on an exterior wall of the school.

School district officials told police they want charges pursued against the three.

Assault arrest made

Two brothers were arrested for assault after deputies were called to a fight involving rocks and a baseball bat on Sunday evening.

David R. Ford, 25, was arrested on a charge of third-degree assault and his brother, Daniel D. Ford, 30, was arrested for second-degree assault.

Deputies said they were called to the 35800 block of North Waldron’s Lane about 6:30 p.m.

Deputies said they were told the two brothers had argued and were wrestling on the ground. One of them picked up a baseball bat and swung it at the other.

David Ford reportedly armed himself with rocks. When another man tried to break up the fight, he was hit in the nose with a rock.
