Vote Delayed On Temporary N-Waste Site

Compiled From Wire Services

The Senate postponed for a week a crucial vote on setting up a temporary site in Nevada for thousands of tons of nuclear waste.

The Senate decision came a day after a federal appeals court ruled that the Energy Department must take responsibility by 1998 for used nuclear fuel stored at more than 100 reactors, turning attention to an issue that has been smoldering in Congress for some 15 years.

In an agreement worked out by Republican and Democratic leaders, a vote to end a filibuster being waged by Nevada’s two senators will be taken July 31 instead of today as originally planned.
