Mayfield Wins First Pole

Compiled From Wire Services

Jeremy Mayfield won his first pole and will be the top qualifier for Sunday’s DieHard 500 Winston Cup race. The 27-year-old Mayfield was only one of 44 qualifiers to break the 50-second barrier on the 2.66-mile track.

He turned a lap in 49.779 seconds, translating to 192.370 mph, which was easily fast enough to relegate Gordon’s 191.417 to the outside of the front row for the 500-mile event.

Spokane’s Chad Little failed to qualify, finishing 42nd in his Pontiac Grand Prix at 187.196.
