Fergon Close To Ending Dry Spell

Compiled From Wire Services

Vicki Fergon didn’t follow a brilliant round with a stinker, leaving her on the verge of ending a 12-year drought.

Fergon, who has won two LPGA events in 20 years on the tour and none since 1984, shot a 4-under-par 68 for an encore to her tournament-record 63 a day earlier and took a six-stroke lead after three rounds of the Heartland Classic at St. Louis.

“I can’t even explain what’s going on here,” said Fergon, who is at 14-under par for the tourney. “The thought popped into my mind on the golf course: When is this all going to end?”

The lead matches the largest of the year in professional golf entering a final round, matching that of ill-fated Greg Norman in the Masters, Dave Stockton in Senior Open and Tom Lehman in the British Open.

Fergon, 40, is 97th on the money list with $32,504 and before this week, she had broken 70 only once all season - the last time Jan. 23 in the HealthSouth Inaugural.

Clarkston’s Robin Walton couldn’t match her round of 68 on Friday. Walton shot a 73 for a 215 total and is now 13 shots off the lead.
