Morissette’s ‘Pill’ Blows By Blowfish

New York Times

Hootie and the Blowfish have officially lost their status as the biggest new act of the ‘90s.

According to Soundscan, Blowfish’s album “Cracked Rear View” has sold 9.03 million copies since it was released in July 1994. It’s a nearly unprecedented sum, but last week, Alanis Morissette’s “Jagged Little Pill,” released a year after “Cracked Rear View,” pulled ahead. It has sold 9.11 million copies, making it the best-selling debut album of the decade.

In the meantime, Hootie’s new album, “Fairweather Johnson,” hasn’t even approached the success of its predecessor. It has only sold 1.6 million copies.
