Orthodox Jews Bar Traffic On Sabbath

Sun., July 28, 1996, midnight

Tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews in traditional black hats and black suits shut down a major Jerusalem road on Saturday in a protest march against traffic on the Jewish Sabbath.

Two police officers were injured by protesters who threw rocks, bottles and eggs, but the demonstration by as many as 100,000 observant Jews was largely peaceful.

The protesters won their point at least temporarily, as police closed Bar Ilan Street to traffic during the scheduled three-hour demonstration.

Religious Jews view driving on the Sabbath as a serious violation of Jewish law and want the street closed on Saturdays to keep traffic out of their neighborhoods.
