U.S. Military Links Up With Australia
The United States pledged Saturday to remain a key Asia-Pacific power into the 21st century, expanding its defense alliance with Australia.
The arrangement will provide a new Pacific Rim war game site for the U.S. military, replacing bases it closed in the Philippines. The new arrangement also matches agreements with Japan and South Korea.
“We intend to remain fully engaged,” Defense Secretary William Perry said after he and Secretary of State Warren Christopher ended two days of meetings with their Australian counterparts.
