Ukraine’s Lina Herasymenko shot the top individual score in the ranking round, 673 of a possible 720.

Rexy Mainaky and Ricky Subagja of Indonesia defeated Huang Zhanzhong and Jiang Xin of China. Also reaching the semifinals were Soon Kit Cheah and Kim Hock Yap of Malaysia.

Baseball

Unbeaten Cuba reinforced its claim as the world’s best amateur team with a 10-8 victory over the United States.

Basketball (Men)

In a rematch of the gold medal game from the 1992 Olympics, the U.S. Dream Team beat Croatia 102-71.

Beach Volleyball (Men) Karch Kiraly and Kent Steffes won the gold medal with a victory over U.S. teammates Mike Dodd and Mike Whitmarsh.

Boxing

American Antonio Tarver stopped David Kowah of Sierra Leone in the first round and advanced to the quarterfinals at 178 pounds.

Canoe-Kayak

Oliver Fix of Germany took the gold in whitewater slalom with a run of 2 minutes, 21 seconds.

Cycling

American Marty Nothstein won the silver medal in the men’s sprint final. Germany’s Jens Fiedler took the gold.

Equestrian

The American dressage team won a bronze medal. Germany got the gold and the Netherlands took the silver.

Field Hockey

Australia jolted the U.S. women’s team for four goals in the first half and won 4-0.

The U.S. men’s team lost to Germany 3-0.

Gymnastics

American Amy Chow tied China’s Bi Wenjiing for silver on the uneven bars. Svetlana Chorkina of Russia won the gold. Switzerland’s Donghua Li won the gold on the pommel horse. Greece ended a 100-year Olympic drought in gymnastics when Ioannis Melissanidis’ floor routine earned him a 9.850 and the gold medal.

In the women’s vault, Simona Amanar of Romania won the gold. Yuri Chechi of Italy won the men’s rings.

Rowing

Romania never trailed in winning the gold medal in the women’s eight on the final day of rowing. The Netherlands won the men’s eight by a half-boat length.

Soccer (Men)

Nigeria eliminated Mexico 2-0 in the quarterfinals and will face Brazil in a rematch in the next round. Brazil beat Ghana 4-2.

Soccer (Women)

Shannon MacMillan’s goal nine minutes into overtime sent the U.S. into the final against China with a 2-1 victory over World Cup champion Norway.

Team Handball (Women)

The U.S. team lost to Hungary 30-24, eliminating the Americans from medal contention.

Tennis

American MaliVai Washington reached the men’s quarterfinals, beating Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark. Washington and Andre Agassi then lost a second-round doubles match to brothers Ellis and Wayne Ferreira of South Africa.

The U.S. women improved to 10-0 as Mary Joe Fernandez and Lindsay Davenport won.

Track And Field

Carl Lewis used a dramatic leap on his final attempt to qualify for the long jump final.

American Charles Austin won the men’s high jump with an Olympic-record 7-10, and Lance Deal gave the United States its first hammer throw medal - a silver - since 1956.

Michael Johnson cruised into the final of the 400.

Balazs Kiss of Hungary took the hammer throw gold. Ghada Shouaa of Syria won the heptathlon. Fatuma Roba of Ethiopia won the women’s marathon, and Wang Junxia of China won the women’s 5,000.

Volleyball

Reserves Danielle Scott and Paula Weishoff played key roles as the U.S. women’s team beat South Korea.

Water Polo

Spain won its first gold medal, beating Croatia 7-5. Italy, the 1992 gold medalist, took the bronze, defeating Hungary.

Weightlifting

Akakide Kakhiashvilis of Greece broke the world record for the 218-1/4-pound division while winning his second Olympic gold medal.
