Deadbeat Status Slows Payoff To 17

Seventeen men who were falsely arrested by corrupt police have been ordered to catch up with child support payments before they can collect their share of a $2.4 million city settlement.

The deadbeat dads won’t get a penny until they satisfy their obligations to their children, said city Controller Jonathan A. Saidel.

A check on their Social Security numbers found that they owed a total of $86,000 in child support to 22 mothers. One man owed $30,000 and had not paid child support in about a decade.

The 17 are part of a group of 38 who claimed they were wrongly arrested. Ten current and former officers have been charged with corruption since last year.
