Pope Urges End To Violence

Mon., July 29, 1996

Pope John Paul II called Sunday for courage to end the ethnic violence and political instability plaguing Burundi.

The pontiff, in his second appeal in four days for the tiny central African nation, condemned last week’s bloodless military coup. World leaders fear the coup could prompt ethnic slaughter like that which ravaged neighboring Rwanda two years ago, killing some 500,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus.

“Ever-worrisome news comes from Burundi,” John Paul said during his customary Sunday noon blessing to the public.
