Breeders’ Cup Race In Trouble
Time is running out on the Ontario Jockey Club and in its efforts to play host to the first Breeders’ Cup races in Canada, with labor officials unwilling to bend in a dispute with racing authorities.
The $10-million seven-race extravaganza has been held in the United States for 12 years.
Because of labor woes, it may become just another late scratch at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto.
The races have been scheduled for Oct. 26, but that’s one of the days, along with the day before, that the Ontario Federation of Labor plans to protest Ontario Premier’s Mike Harris policies. Harris’ Conservative party is holding its annual convention that weekend.
