Hanauer Cuts Face When Miss Bud Flips

Associated Press

Miss Budweiser driver Chip Hanauer was treated for minor facial cuts Saturday after colliding with the Smokin’ Joe’s boat and flipping during qualifying for the APBA Gold Cup.

Hanauer was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital.

Hanauer’s boat hit Mark Tate’s Smokin’ Joe’s and flipped twice, clipping the canopy of Tate’s boat and crushing it. Tate was briefly trapped, but eventually got out when workers pried open the escape hatch. Hanauer’s boat landed upright.

Tate said he was pulling away from Hanauer as the two went into a turn.

“Right at that point I saw him lose it,” Tate said. “His right sponson came up. The boat came across directly over the side of my boat. The right sponson hit the cockpit area, the canopy. At that point, his boat sailed right over me. It gave me a pretty good jolt. It definitely slowed the boat down.”

Both boats sustained damage to their canopies and must be repaired if the drivers plan to run today.
