Gordon Shows Speed, Patience

Compiled From Wire Services

While speed put Jeff Gordon in front at the start of the Miller 500, the patience that carried him through the middle stages of the race paved the way to victory at Dover Downs International Speedway in Dover, Del.

Two days after he won the pole by going faster than any driver in the history of the Monster Mile, Gordon discovered that his qualifying lap of 154.785 mph didn’t mean much after an exchange of mid-race pit stops relegated him to 14th position. But he drove conservatively and, because of caution flags, returned to contention.

At West Allis, Wis., Michael Andretti, taking advantage of a late caution flag in the Miller 200, passed Al Unser Jr. on the restart and went on to his fifth victory at the Milwaukee Mile.

Paul Tracy, last year’s winner and now Unser’s Team Penske teammate, finished third, followed by Emerson Fittipaldi and Greg Moore.

At Barcelona, Spain, two-time world champion Michael Schumacher dominated the competition through a continuous rain to capture the Spanish Grand Prix giving Ferrari its 106th Formula One victory.

It was the 20th career victory for Schumacher but his first in a Ferrari, which had won just two races since 1990, last year’s Canadian Grand Prix and the 1994 German Grand Prix.
