Gsl Stars Defeat Frontier League

REPLAY: Sports, June 4, 1996: Paul Johnson of North Central had the assist on the Greater Spokane League’s first goal in its 2-0 win over the Frontier in Sunday’s senior all-star game. He was misidentified in Monday’s report.

Familiarity was just enough of an edge to lift the Greater Spokane League senior stars to a 2-0 victory over the Frontier League senior soccer stars Sunday afternoon.

“All those guys, about 75 percent, are on my club (Skyhawks) team,” Joe Ascolese of Gonzaga Prep said. “The rest are mostly from the Steelers, so we’re real familiar. It was a lot of fun.”

The game was a preliminary to a Spokane Shadow USISL game at Spokane Falls Community College.

Ryan Vane of Shadle Park scored off an assist from North Central’s Pete Johnson in the 17th minute to give the GSL the lead. University’s Ryan Massey scored in the 52nd minute to ice the game.

All nine GSL teams and all eight that play soccer in the Frontier League were represented. The GSL controlled play most of the game and had the better opportunities to score.

“We have more players to chose from,” Ascolese said. “You’re always going to have better players when you have a bigger pool to choose from. But they were decent. They came at us really hard.”

Ascolese is headed for the University of Santa Clara after he finishes playing for the Shadow.

Dan MacRae had three hits, including a pair of doubles in the first game, and John Barneson doubled twice in the second as the North Stars opened their AAA American Legion campaign by defeating the Pullman Patriots 7-3 and 9-2 at Jackson Field.

Barneson singled and doubled in the first game. Teammate Nick Gonnella, who also had a pair of hits in the opener, contributed a two-run single to a five-run third in the second game.

The Blue Devils scored five times in the eighth inning to beat the Royals 9-4 in the extra-inning final game of the opening-day tripleheader.

Harris leaves WSU

Washington State assistant men’s basketball coach Larry Harris, a former University of Pittsburgh star, has accepted a similar position under Herb Sendek at North Carolina State.

Harris, who spent one season on WSU coach Kevin Eastman’s staff, was an assistant to Jim Anderson at Oregon State from 1993-95.
