Historic Preservation Awards Presented

Compiled By Maisy Fernandez.

Nancy Compau and Integrus Architecture with Wells & Company were among nine preservationists to receive State Historic Preservation Awards.

Compau, director of the Spokane Public Library’s Northwest Room, received the Career Achievement Award for a lifetime of service preserving Washington’s historic resources. She has been instrumental in founding virtually all of Spokane’s preservation efforts the past 20 years.

Integrus Architecture and Wells & Company received the Special Achievement Award for developing Carnegie Square, known as the “urban renaissance” in the west end of Spokane’s downtown. The two firms overcame great odds to revive an abandoned streetscape and create a thriving, revitalized district which now serves as a local model for community revitalization.

The Northeast Washington Association of School Administrators recently honored several Inland Northwest residents for contributions made to education from kindergarten through Grade 12.

Mike Sowder, superintendent of the Mary Walker School District in Springdale, Wash., was honored for regional leadership in telecommunications, vocational education, governmental affairs and interscholastic athletics.

Others recognized were: Don Birch, publisher of the Colville (Wash.) Statesman-Examiner; Rob McKinnon, chairman of Medical Lake’s last three school levy campaigns and president of the middle school’s parent-teacherstudent organization; Betty McGee, the driving force behind Medical Lake School District’s successful levy and bond issues; the Palouse Supporting and Caring for Kids (SACK) and Garfield SACK, groups which donated more than $13,000 to local education during the last seven years.

Thomas Clark, a 1988 graduate of Shadle Park High School, recently graduated from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. His three-year residency will be in Atlanta.

Gina Warren, a double major in broadcast and French at Gonzaga University, received the Pallas Athene Award as the top graduating senior female cadet in the Fourth Army ROTC region, which includes all ROTC units west of the Mississippi River.

Gerald Leahy, retiring president and CEO of Sacred Heart Medical Center, received the Bishop’s Medal from the Catholic Diocese of Spokane at its annual Bishop’s Dinner to benefit Catholic Charities.

Julie Boyce, administrative secretary for the Spokane Parks and Recreation Department, received the Secretary of the Year Award from the Spokane Chapter of Professional Secretaries International. Boyce, who has worked for the city since 1973, became a Certified Professional Secretary in 1989.
