Japanese Trade Gap Boosts Dollar

News of a Japanese trade deficit in the first few weeks of May nudged the dollar higher against the yen Wednesday, but comments from a former Fed chairman and looming economic data kept the gains in check.

The dollar also ended higher against the German mark and most other major currencies ahead of Friday’s release of U.S. unemployment numbers and an official summary of Japanese economic conditions.
