1 Arrested In Nuclear Smuggling Case
A nuclear engineer has been arrested on charges of smuggling about 6 pounds of radioactive uranium into Germany, and authorities across Europe are seeking suspected accomplices.
Prosecutor Dieter Emrich said Friday that the 49-year-old Slovakian man was arrested May 29 in a bank in the southern city of Ulm, about 50 miles east of Stuttgart.
The engineer and an unidentified accomplice had opened a safe deposit box there to store the uranium, Emrich said.
The arrest came one day after police in Germany were tipped that the engineer had offered to sell the material to a contact in Austria for $1 million.
Part of the uranium is believed to be from a commercial heavy water nuclear reactor in the former Soviet Union, Emrich said.
