Pipken Blanks North Stars

Steve Pipken threw a two-hitter Friday night at Jackson Field to give the Cannons a 6-0 nightcap victory and a split of their AAA American Legion baseball doubleheader with the North Stars.

Pipken’s gem included six strikeouts and two walks and helped avenge the Cannons’ 15-5 loss in the first game.

Jeremy Isherwood stroked two doubles and a single and drove in two runs for the Cannons, while teammate Andrew Larson added a pair of doubles and one RBI.

The North Stars’ first-game rout was fueled by the bat of Sam Hess, who had three hits - including two doubles - and drove in five runs.

College baseball

Gonzaga’s Steve Schorzman and Jerrod Wong were selected this week in the major league’s amateur baseball draft.

Schorzman, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound right-handed pitcher, was picked by the Chicago White Sox in the 11th round. Wong, a 6-3, 215-pound left-handed pitcher-outfielder, was taken by Atlanta in the 33rd round.

Schorzman, a junior transfer from North Idaho College, finished 2-1 in his lone season at GU and posted an earned-run average of 7.77. Wong, a senior, finished 1-4 with a 7.91 ERA as a pitcher and batted .315 with eight home runs and 46 runs batted in.
