Group Says It Shot Wife Of Political Prisoner

Compiled From Wire Services

A mysterious group claiming to seek the release of imprisoned opposition leader Moshood Abiola has taken responsibility for the murder of one of his wives.

The group calling itself the Committee for the Release of Moshood Abiola issued a statement Friday, saying Kudirat Abiola’s campaign to free her husband was “driven by a consuming ambition for political limelight” at the expense of her husband.

Nigerian journalists said it was the first time they had heard of the committee.

Mrs. Abiola, 44, was shot at close range by six unidentified gunmen Tuesday. She died of her head wounds several hours later, as did her chauffeur.

Mrs. Abiola had openly criticized the government of military ruler Gen. Sani Abacha and some opposition leaders believe the government is behind her murder.
