Tigers Have Yanks’ Number - Twice

From Wire Reports

American League

Detroit won two straight games for the first time in almost two months Saturday, rocking Kenny Rogers for eight runs as the Tigers outlasted the New York Yankees 9-7 in Detroit.

Rogers (4-2) worked just 2-2/3 innings in his shortest start since 1993. He gave up eight hits, including a three-run double by John Flaherty and a two-run double from Cecil Fielder.

The Tigers had not won two straight since April 13-14 against California.

White Sox 2, Orioles 1

Baltimore

James Baldwin and four relievers combined on a nine-hitter and Danny Tartabull drove in both runs as streaking Chicago beat Baltimore.

Lyle Mouton had three hits for the White Sox, who have gone 17-3 since May 16 to move a season-high 17 games better than .500. Despite the third-best record in the majors, Chicago trails Cleveland by one game in the A.L. Central.

Indians 5, Angels 0

Cleveland

Orel Hershiser and Julian Tavarez combined on a shutout and Manny Ramirez drove in two runs as Cleveland extended California’s losing streak to six.

Hershiser (5-4) went seven innings, allowing four hits and one walk and striking out four. He has yielded one run on nine hits in 14 innings against California this season.

Rangers 2, Blue Jays 0

Arlington, Texas

Darren Oliver, whose 1995 season was cut short by rotator cuff surgery, pitched his first major league shutout, leading Texas over Toronto. It was his first career complete game in 18 starts.

Oliver won four games last season before undergoing surgery to repair a partial tear in his left shoulder.

Twins 4-7, Athletics 2-13

Minneapolis

George Williams hit a grand slam and Brent Gates added a two-run homer in a six-run fifth that carried Oakland to a win over Minnesota and a split of the only regularly scheduled doubleheader in the majors this season.

The Twins won the opener, ending their eight-game losing streak against the A’s.

Trailing 3-2 in the second game, Gates put Oakland ahead to stay and Williams followed with his second career grand slam as the Athletics beat the Twins for the fifth time in six games this season.

Brewers 3, Red Sox 2 (10)

Boston

Kevin Koslofski, called up from Triple-A earlier in the day, doubled in the 10th and scored on Boston’s fourth error, leading Milwaukee to a win.

Koslofski doubled off the Green Monster and slid into second to beat the throw. Joe Hudson (0-2) got Dave Nilsson to hit a ground ball to second, but Jeff Frye couldn’t handle it and Koslofski scored.

Williams on leave

Bernie Williams has left the Yankees indefinitely.

After hitting two homers in the Yankees’ loss to the Tigers, Williams was granted permission to return to his home in Puerto Rico, where his 5-year-old son, Bernie Jr., is hospitalized with a bone infection behind his left ear.

This is the second time in less than a week Williams has had to leave the team. Last Wednesday, Williams also flew home to see his son, but he was back for Thursday’s game. This time there’s no timetable.

Clearing the bases

As part of a Negro Leagues salute, the Tigers wore replica uniforms of the Detroit Stars while New York was garbed in the colors of the New York Black Yankees. It was the first time the Yankees wore anything different from their traditional uniform. … The Angels’ Chili Davis, Gary DiSarcina and Jack Howell all are day-to-day with strained left hamstring muscles. … The Indians’ Eddie Murray is sidelined with a strained right hamstring.

California’s Jason Grimsley is scheduled to face Cleveland’s Brian Anderson today at Jacobs Field. The pitchers were traded for each other this spring. … Rangers first baseman Will Clark is expected to be out three or four days with a strained left quadriceps muscle sustained while running the bases Friday night.
