Cyclist Rebecca Twigg, of Colorado Springs, beat Janie Quigley of Wilmington, Del., in the women’s pursuit final at Trexlertown, Pa., earning the final spot on the five-member U.S. women’s cycling team.

At Potomac, Md., Karch Kiraly and Kent Steffes staved off elimination while third-seeded Mike Dodd and Mike Whitmarsh clinched a bid to play in the Olympics at the U.S. beach volleyball trials. Dodd and Whitmarsh shocked Kiraly and Steffes, the top seeds, 15-8 Friday, and knocked off No. 2 Adam Johnson and Randy Stolkos 15-7 Saturday to grab the second spot on the U.S. Olympic team. Kiraly and Steffes will play Johnson and Stolkos today for the remaining slot.

At Knoxville, Tenn., Dominique Dawes became the first gymnast to sweep the four event finals twice at the Coca-Cola National Gymnastics Championships. National overall champion Shannon Miller, second-place Jaycie Phelps, third-place Dominique Moceanu and fourth-place Amanda Borden sat out the event finals to keep from aggravating injuries. The Olympic trials are in three weeks.
