Man Shoots Teen In Passing Car After Holding Up Two Outside Restaurant, Robber Shoots At Car

A man who was robbing two people at a Spokane Valley restaurant early Saturday turned and shot into a passing car, critically injuring a teenager.

The 19-year-old shooting victim was in critical, but stable condition at Deaconess Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his neck, said sheriff’s Sgt. Garry Smith. He did not release the teen’s name.

The two robbery victims, 33-year-old Devon Kelley and 25-year-old Kenzie Wiese, both of Idaho, were not injured.

Kelley and Wiese told deputies they were in the parking lot in front of Denny’s, 5815 E. Sprague, at 2:30 a.m. Saturday when a white Chevrolet Cavalier drove up.

A man wearing a blue bandana over his face and a hat got out, pointed a semiautomatic handgun at the two and demanded money. Both gave him their wallets.

The robber then turned the gun on a car driving through the Denny’s parking lot and fired, sending a bullet through a rear passenger window, Smith said.

After firing the shot, the robber got back into the white car and sped north on Fancher Road.

The bullet hit the teen in the neck and exited through his chest, said sheriff’s Lt. David Wiyrick.

The driver of the car rushed the boy to a nearby fire station and pounded on the door, but could not roust firefighters. The driver, who was shaken, but not hurt, then drove to HiCo Village, 9219 E. Sprague, and called deputies.

When deputies arrived, the teen was not breathing, Wiyrick said. A deputy cleared the teen’s airway while he waited for an ambulance, which then rushed him to the hospital.

Witnesses said the gunman was dressed in a long-sleeve, blue plaid shirt and dark pants.

Deputies are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call Crime Check at 456-2233.
