Rookie Pitcher A Hit With Angels

Associated Press

American League

Rookie Ryan Hancock, in a remarkable display of hitting, pitching and fielding in just his second major league game, starred Sunday as the California Angels beat the host Cleveland Indians 8-6 in 13 innings.

In the top of the 13th, Hancock became the first California pitcher to get a hit since the inception of the DH in 1973.

Forced to bat because of a lineup switch, Hancock singled off Julian Tavarez with one out, making him the first Angels pitcher to hit safely since Nolan Ryan on Sept. 30, 1972. Hancock later scored on J.T. Snow’s second home run of the game.

Snow’s homer in the 13th came with two outs off Tavarez (2-3). Snow and Garret Anderson homered in the fourth inning, and Tim Salmon later homered for the Angels.

Albert Belle hit his major league-leading 24th homer for the Indians.

Yankees 3, Tigers 2

Detroit

Dwight Gooden pitched four-hit ball for eight innings, and first-place New York averted a three-game sweep by Detroit.

Gooden (5-4) walked none, struck out six and left with a 3-1 lead. John Wetteland relieved to start the ninth and gave up a home run to Bobby Higginson before getting his 14th save.

Greg Gohr (3-8) was the loser.

White Sox 12, Orioles 9

Baltimore

Danny Tartabull homered and doubled in an eight-run fourth inning as Chicago beat Baltimore and Mike Mussina to complete a three-game sweep.

Mussina and Chicago starter Wilson Alvarez both came in with five-game winning streaks, but neither made it out of the fourth inning. Mussina (8-3) yielded 11 hits and a career-high-tying nine runs, while Alvarez allowed nine hits and six earned runs.

Matt Karchner (5-0) won and Roberto Hernandez got his 19th save.

Frank Thomas homered for Chicago. Cal Ripken and Rafael Palmeiro connected for Baltimore, but Roberto Alomar went 0 for 4 and had his 22-game hitting streak stopped.

Brewers 11, BoSox 8 (10)

Boston

John Jaha tripled with the bases loaded to break a 10th-inning tie and lead Milwaukee over Boston.

Terry Burrows (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings and Mike Fetters got his 11th save.

Rangers 8, Blue Jays 6

Arlington, Texas

Juan Gonzalez hit a three-run homer, highlighting a five-run third inning that sent Texas over Toronto for a three-game sweep.

Bobby Witt (6-4) survived 5 shaky innings, and passed last year’s combined five victories for Florida and Texas. He left with a 6-5 lead after allowing five hits and walking five.

Dennis Cook, Jeff Russell and Mike Henneman teamed to pitch 3-1/3 innings of one-hit relief. Henneman worked the ninth for his 18th save.

Twins 5, Athletics 3

Minneapolis

Scott Stahoviak homered and Frank Rodriguez won his second complete game of the season as Minnesota beat Oakland.

The Twins have won seven of nine games in June. The victory also lifted Minnesota to the .500 mark after 60 games.

Stahoviak’s fourth-inning home run was his sixth of the season and gave the Twins a 4-3 lead. He also walked twice, singled and kept his season-long errorless streak alive at first base.
