Missing Hiker Found Dead At Bottom Of 40-Foot Cliff

A nature hike ended in tragedy for a psychologist who fell to his death from a 40-foot cliff in a rugged area north of Fairchild Air Force Base.

The victim, 45-year-old Charles R. McIlroy, was reported missing Saturday night after he failed to return from an outing.

McIlroy’s brother, who flew in from Pennsylvania to join the search, found the body Monday afternoon at the foot of the cliff.

Bill McIlroy combed an area where his brother frequently took walks and found a hat and water bottle above the cliff, Spokane County sheriff’s deputies said.

Investigators have ruled out foul play.

“The guy probably slipped on moss,” Lt. David Wiyrick said.

McIlroy lived in a ranch-style home in nearby Deep Creek with his wife and three children.

A neighbor, who asked not to be identified, said the area where McIlroy liked to hike is “very steep and rugged country.”

He said the wooded area is popular with local residents. Kids hike and ride motorcycles there.

Friends and co-workers were shocked Monday afternoon after learning about the accident.

“He’s a very good family man, very dedicated,” said Verne Cressey, a psychiatrist who worked with McIlroy at Eastern State Hospital for about two years.

Cressey said McIlroy planned a surprise party for his wife about two weeks ago, inviting about 30 people.

Cressey said his friend enjoyed the outdoors and playing golf.

McIlroy and Cressey were part of a team that evaluated the ability of accused criminals to stand trial.

The victim’s family could not be reached for comment.
