Man Sentenced For Assault, Biting Dog Man Threw Knife At Officers, Bit Police Dog That Later Died

Associated Press

Not only did the man bite the dog, but the dog died.

Arnim John Kudinow of Lake Oswego was sentenced to 18 months in prison for ramming a police car with his truck, throwing a knife at officers and biting the nose of a police dog.

The dog, a Dutch malinois named Ronnie, died from a streptococcus infection 3-1/2 weeks after it was bitten.

Clackamas County deputy district attorney Matthew H. Mattox said police can’t prove it, but they think the bite led to the infection that killed the dog.

Kudinow sank his teeth into the animal following a 17-mile chase involving six police and sheriff’s patrol cars last December. A gas station attendant had reported that a pickup driver appeared drunk, starting the chase.

The pursuit ended in a rural area where the pickup became stuck in mud.

Kudinow pulled out a knife and threatened deputies before throwing it at them.

Clackamas County sheriff’s Sgt. Peter A. Tutmark sent the dog after Kudinow, and “Kudinow grabbed him in the area behind the jaw,” Tutmark wrote in a report.

“The dog was biting or attempting to bite on Kudinow’s right forearm. Kudinow was biting the dog in the top of his nose. Kudinow and the dog continued to fight. I was concerned that Kudinow was going to choke the dog with his collar.”

Circuit Judge John K. Lowe last week also sentenced Kudinow to two years on probation, and ordered him to pay $594.80 for damages, undergo anger control counseling, alcohol-abuse treatment and mental health therapy.
