Georgia Investigated

The Georgia football program has come under the formal scrutiny of the NCAA, which says it uncovered evidence that a former assistant offered money and a car to a potential recruit.

The NCAA charges, revealed by the university after it received a letter of inquiry, also involve a south Florida youth sports organizer who allegedly tried to funnel prospects to Georgia and another university.

Through his lawyer, former assistant Frank Orgel denied telling an athlete last year he would be paid $7,500 to sign with Georgia and $500 a month while enrolled, along with the use of an automobile.

University president Charles Knapp said the school has hired an outside lawyer, Ed Tolley, to investigate the allegations and respond to the 10 charges in the NCAA letter, which was received Tuesday.

Sekou Sanyika, 18, a highly regarded redshirt freshman linebacker at Cal, is expected to turn himself in Monday for strong-arm robbery in Berkeley-Albany Municipal Court, police inspector Dan Wolke said.

Edward T. Lambert, 18, who has accepted a scholarship to play football for San Jose State, already has been charged in the robbery late June 1. He pleaded innocent last week.

The University of Louisville has received an injunction prohibiting Conference USA from expelling the school because of a dispute over football-only expansion.
