Mike Welch Named Volleyball Coach At University

Mike Welch was named University High School volleyball coach on Thursday, replacing Rick Austing, who resigned.

Welch, son of Lewis and Clark volleyball coach Buzzy Welch, recently graduated from Eastern Washington University.

Last year, Mike Welch studenttaught at Shadle Park and was an assistant to Highlanders volleyball coach Linda Sheridan.

Basketball

Ferris assistant Don VanLierop will be named today as head boys basketball coach at Eisenhower High in Yakima.

VanLierop, an Eastern Washington University graduate, assisted Ferris head coach Wayne Gilman for six years during two stints.

VanLierop was head coach at North Central for the 1993-94 and 1994-95 seasons. He resigned the NC job to return to Ferris, where he teaches.

Water skiing

The International Novice Water Ski Tour is putting on an amateur competition at Nine Mile Falls Resort this weekend. There will be practice runs today. Saturday will feature kneeboarding and weightboarding beginning at 8 a.m. Slalom racing is scheduled for Sunday.

Baseball

In Class AA Legion, David Edwards tossed his first no-hitter, facing only 22 batters in seven innings to lead Strike Zone to a 12-0 victory over Fast Break Pizza.
