Gordon On Pole Again

Compiled From Wire Services

Jeff Gordon continued his recent blitz of the Winston Cup circuit with his third straight pole, leading an assault in which 37 of 40 drivers broke the track qualifying record at the resurfaced Pocono International Raceway in Long Pond, Pa.

“The car stuck like glue,” he said after winning his third straight pole with a speed of 169.725 mph in a Chevrolet. “I got all I could out of the car and the track today.”

Gordon wasn’t optimistic prior to the 53.207-second tour of the 2.5-mile track that gave him the pole for the running Sunday of the $1.3 million UAW-GM Teamwork 500.

Kenny Bernstein, John Force, Chuck Harris and Dave Schultz are the No. 1 qualifiers entering final eliminations today for the NHRA Pontiac Excitement Nationals at Hebron, Ohio.

Bernstein was No. 1 in Top Fuel, Force in Funny Car, Harris in Pro Stock and Schultz in Pro Stock Motorcycle after qualifying ended June 8. Eliminations were postponed June 9 due to rain.
