Orchestra, Mass Choir To Perform At Opera House

A 350-voice choir and a 60-piece orchestra will join in harmony for the “Mighty Cross: a Celebration of the Tree of Life” on Sunday.

Nine area churches are combining forces to create “a worship experience unlike any other” at 3 and 6 p.m. at the Spokane Opera House.

Members of the music and worship ministries are from the First Assembly of God, First Church of the Nazarene, Fourth Memorial, Garland Avenue Alliance, Harvest Christian Fellowship, New Horizons Community, Northview Bible, Plymouth Congregational and Valley Fourth Memorial churches.

The performance is free.

Day camp drama

“The Day God Brought Down the House” is the name of a music and drama day camp sponsored by Fourth Memorial Church June 24 to July 3.

The camp is designed to train grade-school students in the basics of drama, voice and dance, said Bryan Pitotti, spokesman.

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day there will be rehearsals, Bible lessons, crafts, Scripture memorization and team competitions.

The 45-minute musical, “The Day God Brought Down the House,” will be staged at 7 p.m. July 3 at the church, 2000 N. Standard.

Camp registration is $20 per student.

New Post Falls church

Messiah Lutheran Church will have its first worship service on Sunday at St. George’s Roman Catholic Church, 2010 N. William, in Post Falls.

A welcoming fellowship will be at 5:30 p.m. and be followed by the service at 6:30.

The church has been in the planning for several months and was drawn together by several missionminded families, said the Rev. David Haught, pastor.

The members “share a common vision and desire to build a biblically conservative and traditional church which will not just minister to its people, but most importantly, service God and their community,” he said.

One goal of the new church is to work with existing churches to find areas of shared ministry, he said.

“We get a lot of stares when we tell people we will be meeting in a Roman Catholic Church,” he said, “but God is doing some very unusual things in these days.”

Denominations are working together, recognizing and honoring differences and using them to work together for the same end, Haught said.

Learn to love yourself

Greg Tamblyn, a national touring singer and songwriter, will present a concert based on the power of love at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Unity Church of Spokane, 2900 S. Bernard.

Tamblyn uses humorous personal stories and songs to reach his audience, including songs like “The Shootout at the I’m OK, You’re OK Corral,” “I Have a Tendency for Codependency” and “Clyde, My Inner Guide.”

“The whole message is that love is a healing thing and that loving yourself is the best thing you can do,” Tamblyn said.

Clergyman appointed

The Rev. Kenneth G. Beason has been appointed to the part-time position of assisting priest at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, beginning Sunday. A reception in his honor will be held following the 10 a.m. service.

Beason recently retired as an Air Force chaplain with the rank of colonel.

He will fill the position vacated by the Rev. John Buenz, who resigned after 10 years as a pastor at St. John’s.
