Fire Smokes Out Couple

From Staff Reports

Fire in a home workshop Monday morning chased two people from their South Hill house.

When firefighters arrived at 2020 S. Mount Vernon, flames and heavy smoke poured from the attached workshop and threatened to enter the home through an open door, said Joe Stapleton, a city fire battalion chief.

Firefighters quickly knocked down the blaze and were able to contain it to the workshop, Stapleton said.

A smoke detector, which also sounds at an alarm company, alerted homeowners James and Edith Dunlap to the fire about 9:15 a.m. The alarm company called the fire department as the Dunlaps left the house.

Both escaped without injury.

The fire started under a workbench and is considered accidental, Stapleton said. The cause has not been determined.
