Local Students Receive Pacesetter Awards

Fourteen Inland Northwest professional-technical education students received PaceSetter Awards from the Spokane Area Professional-Technical Administrators and Spokane Teachers Credit Union.

Recipients are: Kimberly Baird and Crystal Weatherbee, Ferris High School; Jennifer Chea and Ryan Gallagher, Spokane Skills Center; Jessica Coombs and Eric Davis, University High School; Rhea Cox, North Central High School; Tricia Rae Fry, Pullman High School; Phuoc Xuan Nguyen and Brenda Schluter, Rogers High School; Rachel Sherwood, Gloria Wood and Christopher Bush, Shadle Park High School; and Ken Voss, Mead High School.

Mai Pham, a senior at Shadle Park High School, received the 1996 Joseph Heslin Memorial Scholarship of $400, awarded annually to a Shadle senior planning on pursuing college studies in education and/or biology.

Lindsay Daehlin, Spokane, was awarded a $2,000 Member Scholarship from Lutheran Brotherhood. Michael Clark, also of Spokane, received a $500 Lutheran Brotherhood scholarship. They were two of 842 recipients selected from 3,130 applicants for these national awards. They are members of Spokane Branch No. 8297.

Bethany Rooney, a senior at Shadle Park High School, has been awarded a Trustee’s Award Scholarship to attend the Columbus College of Art and Design as a result of a portfolio competition held this spring. She is the daughter of Darlene and Pat Rooney, Spokane.

Jerry McKellar, Colville, Wash., received the Best of the Show/3D award at the recent National Western Art Show and Auction in Ellensburg.

CPM Development Corp. awarded seven college scholarships of $1,500 each to children of employees of its subsidiary companies. Those receiving scholarships were: Jennifer Bond, Katie Bryntesen, Cheryl Callen, Ryan Lamb, Brad Parker, Lea Ruhl and Jeremy Scott.

Bryan King is a winner of Xavier University’s annual Service Book Award, given to high school student from 16 different states. He is a junior at Gonzaga Prep.

Jaime Meenach, a 1996 graduate of Freeman High School, was awarded a $1,000 college scholarship by the Cargill Foundation. Jaime’s parents are Hal and Robyn Meenach, Valleyford.

“Japanese Garden,” a composition written for piano by Lisa Gonnella, received second place in the state Young Composers Project sponsored by the Washington State Music Teachers Association. Lisa is a fourth-grade student at Mullan Road Elementary.

Jonah E. Sutherland, Spokane, has been elected a member of Phi Beta Kappa for the Vassar College Class of 1996. A psychology major at Vassar, he is the son of William Sutherland and Rebecca Bohn. He is a graduate of St. George’s High School.
