Frontier Olympiad Team Places In National Contest

The Frontier Junior High School Olympiad Team of Moses Lake received 11th-place at the National Science Olympiad Tournament at Georgia Tech-Atlanta in May.

The team earned the most medals (five), had the most top-10 finishers (eight events with 11 team members) and the highest team placement of any Washington team ever.

Frontier also received the tournament’s Spirit Award.

The group is coached by Steve Gjefle, Chris Koester and Jeff S. Tye.

Several Inland Northwest students who will attend Carroll College in Helena, Mont., next fall have received Presidential Scholarships. The students and their home towns are:

Christopher McCowan, Mead; Nathan Hall and Benjamin Spiger, both of Nine Mile Falls; Derrick Foge, Lisa Gutzman, Matthew King, Brooks Laselle, Geoffrey Morton, Amanda Perrigue, Benjamin Giraud, Christopher Harden, Alicia Magee, Brandon Mulvey, Mychelle Bowers, Craig Henneberry, Suzanne Herion, Katherine Laughlin, Lori Stose, Russell Gates, Denae Smith and Neely Gibbon, all of Spokane.

Jill Smith owner of Buckeye Beans and Herbs Inc., received the Entrepreneur of the Year Award from the Eastern Washington University College of Business and Public Administration at the college’s annual awards dinner at Cavanaugh’s Inn at the Park.

Gladys Kosty, an English teacher at Lewis and Clark High School, was named Distinguished Teacher for the Fourth Quarter of the 1995-96 school year. Kosty was honored by US West at a luncheon at Patsy Clark’s Mansion early last month.

Kosty has been a teacher for 30 years and at LC for the past 10 years.

Peter John Wade, Cheney, has earned a Bachelor of Science in engineering with high scholastic honors from the Colorado School of Mines.
