Handmade Projects Very Special Keepsakes For New Mom, Baby

Pat Trexler And Nancy J. Thomas Universal Press Syndicate

Although the idea of needlecrafting for babies is not a new one, it certainly is one of the fastest-growing areas of interest. New or soon-to-be moms enjoy the idea of making something special for their baby. Grandmothers take a special delight in working on a project their new grandchild can wear or cuddle up in, such as the afghan we show here today.

Handmade baby items are one of the best gifts you can give as a shower present. You are giving something of yourself when you choose to make a special piece for a new little one.

Here are a few tips that will help you choose and execute your project:

Washable yarns are a plus. This includes acrylic yarns and soft, washable wools. New mothers will appreciate being able to throw a garment or afghan into the washer and dryer. If the yarn’s ball band includes care instructions, include a band with the completed gift.

While color isn’t so much of an issue these days, pink for girls and blue for boys is considered traditionally appropriate. Why not choose colorful brights such as lively reds, greens or turquoises rather than conventional pastels? Many children’s manufacturers are choosing brights or dusty colors even for infants.

Variegated and tweed yarns can add special interest to an otherwise simple piece.

If you don’t know the size of the baby, make your project larger rather than smaller. Sleeves or pants cuffs can be folded up. Babies grow quickly.

If time is an issue, look for patterns that can be made quite quickly.

Simple stitches will make it easier to complete your project in the given time. If you run out of time, make a swatch of the intended piece and give it in a card with a little drawing of the finished garment. Tell the new parent when you’ll complete the gift so you’ll remain focused on completing the project!

Try making a group afghan as a gift for a baby shower. Each person can make one or more stripes or squares for a unique gift. Be sure to establish a deadline and decide who will be responsible for joining the pieces and finishing it.

To personalize the gift, embroider or duplicate stitch the baby’s name on the piece.

Baby accessories are always fun and welcome gifts. If you make cardigans, a little matching cap is an ideal addition. Make sure that it is large enough for the baby’s head and that it will be easy to put on and take off. Many darling patterns are available.

If you are adding buttons, they should be washable and color fast. Sew them on well so that a teething baby can’t chew them off. Look for special “child appropriate” buttons. Many button manufacturers make an amazing assortment in all sorts of shapes, colors and sizes.

Framed cross stitch samplers make lovely gifts. You may need to add the name and birth date at the last minute.

Make a “growing” sweater by working the sleeves from the top down. Offer to add to the sleeves as the baby grows.

If you want to make a pullover, add a button band at the shoulder so it will be easy to get on over the baby’s head.

A charming baby afghan is a perfect token of love for your favorite baby. Today’s design features popcorn stitches and openwork and is bordered by a scalloped edge. We recommend a washable worsted-weight yarn used with a size 9 circular needle. The afghan measures 34 by 40 inches, including the border.
