Hospital Volunteers Receive Scholarships

Marya Bruning and Christopher Johansen, will both receive the $1,000 Kim Svee Memorial Teen Volunteer Scholarship presented by Kootenai Medical Center.

Bruning, who plans to attend the University of Idaho, has been a teen volunteer since 1991 and dedicated more than 900 volunteer hours. Johansen, who plans to attend college in Oregon, has been a volunteer since 1990 and donated more than 1,000 hours of service.

Both recipients, who are 1996 high school graduates, served on the teen volunteer advisory board and were active in many activities in high school.

Money for the scholarships, which was established by the family of a former KMC volunteer who was killed in a car accident in 1984, is acquired through fund-raising efforts of teen volunteers.

Andrew Baerlocher, a junior at St. Maries High School, recently won a first-place award and an honorable mention at the 47th International Science and Engineering Fair held in Tuscon, Ariz.

Baerlocher received the first-place Eastman Kodak Award for best use of photography in collecting information and using it in research. The award includes a cash prize and a photo kit complete with an autofocus 35mm camera, a Funsaver camera and two books for personal use.

Baerlocher, son of Dale and Robin Baerlocher of St. Maries, received a membership to the Optical Society of America and one-year subscriptions to their trade journals for his honorable mention.

His project, Interferometry-Non Destructive Testing, involved testing metal strengths with the use of holography.

Adrian Hunsinger, a 1996 graduate of Lake City High School, recently received a four-year scholarship under the GTE College Scholarship Service Award Program.

Hunsinger, daughter of Tom and Bobbie Hunsinger of Coeur d’Alene, received the scholarship under a program that recognizes outstanding achievements by children of GTE employees and will attend Gonzaga University in Spokane this fall. She will also receive scholarships from Gonzaga and the Coeur d’Alene Rotary Club, where she was selected as a Student-of-the-Month.

She was selected by The College Scholarship Service of Princeton, N.J., as one of 90 children of GTE employees nationwide. Her father is a cable splicer for GTE in Coeur d’Alene.
