Newspaper Boycott Called Off After Talks

From Staff And Wire Reports

A boycott of The Spokesman-Review was called off this week by its organizer after discussions with the newspaper’s editor.

Spencer Hamm, executive director of Citizens for Nonviolent Action Against Racism or CINAAR, said he was ending his call for a boycott following discussions of his concerns with Chris Peck, editor of The Spokesman-Review.

In a letter to CINAAR, Peck said the newspaper would be happy to meet with members of the group to discuss concerns that ethnic minorities are too often portrayed in negative ways by the media.

This issue, plus a desire to draw attention to a planned multicultural retail and shopping development in Spokane’s East Central neighborhood, were the reasons for the picketing in front of the newspaper’s downtown offices, Hamm said.
