Brazil Bounces Batches Of Bad Books

Compiled From Wire Services

Brazil is throwing out 263 textbooks used by the country’s schoolchildren, saying they flunk when it comes to education and common sense.

The Education Ministry cited “absurd” errors in the rejected books, such as illustrations that show men with ovaries, or testicles on their thighs.

Other vetoed books were outdated - in information and in attitude, educators said.

Examples there include a book called, “I Like Communication,” which stated, “Girls like to play and cook, and boys like to build things.”

Only 63 of the 1,159 different textbooks in use through the eighth grade received the Education Ministry’s unqualified approval.
