Education Panel Standardizes Core Classes At State Colleges

From Staff And Wire Reports

Idaho’s public colleges and universities will be more “user friendly” starting in the fall of 1997, state education officials say.

For the first time, freshmen and sophomores at the four-year college, three universities and two community colleges will find that 88 basic courses will have the same name and number no matter where they are taken.

If a student transfers, the courses will meet graduation requirements at any of the schools.

In other words, Introduction to Philosophy (PHIL 101) will be Introduction to Philosophy (PHIL 101) whether it’s taken at Idaho State University in Pocatello or North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene.

The state Board of Education approved the change in June, making Idaho one of only 11 states to adopt common names and numbers for core courses at all public institutions.
