Florida Pushes Giants Skid To 5
National League
Charles Johnson singled home the winning run with one out in the 10th inning Tuesday night as the Florida Marlins handed the visiting San Francisco Giants their fifth consecutive loss, 5-4.
The Giants tied it in the ninth on Shawon Dunston’s leadoff homer against Robb Nen.
Gary Sheffield, who earlier hit his 23rd home run, drew a leadoff walk to start the Florida 10th. Terry Pendleton added a one-out double and Kurt Abbott was intentionally walked before Johnson singled cleanly to left field.
Expos 8, Pirates 2
Montreal Darrin Fletcher went 4 for 4 and drove in four runs to fuel the Expos’ win over Pittsburgh.
Fletcher hit a two-run double off Zane Smith (4-4) to highlight a five-run first inning. He added a solo homer in the sixth and an RBI double in the seventh as the Expos won their third straight.
Astros 9, Padres 4 San Diego
Sean Berry hit his second grand slam in his last 10 games and Derek Bell and Orlando Miller also homered as Houston routed San Diego.
Berry hit a 2-2 pitch from Doug Bochtler into the left-field seats with one out in the eighth for his third career grand slam.
Mets 3, Rockies 2 New York
Right fielder Dante Bichette overran Todd Hundley’s routine fly ball, turning it into an RBI single that helped New York beat Colorado.
The Mets scored all three of their runs in the third. Bichette and Vinny Castilla each hit their 14th homers, giving Colorado an early 2-0 lead.
Braves 4, Cardinals 3 Atlanta
Marquis Grissom and Chipper Jones homered and Jason Schmidt pitched five impressive innings for his first win in 2-1/2 months as Atlanta held off St. Louis.
Grissom hit Todd Stottlemyre’s second pitch over the left-field fence for his ninth homer.
Cubs 2, Dodgers 0 Los Angeles
Steve Trachsel outdueled Hideo Nomo for his second career shutout and Chicago beat Los Angeles, which played with manager Tom Lasorda, in the hospital with abdominal pain.
Trachsel (6-4) lowered his ERA to 2.15 and went the distance for the fifth time in 68 major league starts.
Reds 9-3, Phils 1-1 Cincinnati
Kevin Jarvis extended Cincinnati’s streak of impressive starts by pitching into the seventh and picking up the win over Philadelphia in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Reds rocked Rafael Quirico for seven runs in the first two innings and coasted.
The Reds have won seven of nine, in large part because of their starting pitching, which has given up just 18 hits and one earned run in the last four games.
Clearing the bases
Florida reliever Matt Mantei will have season-ending surgery on his right rotator cuff in three weeks… . The Phillies put left-hander Sid Fernandez on the disabled list with a sore pitching elbow.
