Mcgwire’s 300th Fails To Rescue A’S

On the day Oakland’s Mark McGwire hit his 300th home run, Bobby Higginson drove in a career-high five runs as the visiting Detroit Tigers defeated the Athletics 10-8 Tuesday.

Detroit won for the fourth time in five games as Mark Lewis added three RBIs with a double, single and bases-loaded walk. Cecil Fielder had a solo homer, his 18th.

McGwire became the 73rd player in major league history, and the 10th active player, to reach 300 homers when he hit a pair of solo shots. He has 24 this season.

Rangers 5, Orioles 2 Arlington

Ivan Rodriguez hit two homers, leading Kevin Gross and Texas past Baltimore.

Brady Anderson hit his 26th homer, most in the majors, for the Orioles. But Baltimore lost for the ninth time in 12 games against Texas this season.

Twins 6-2, Yankees 1-6 Minneapolis

New York, held to one run in its previous two games, got three hits and three RBIs from Bernie Williams to win the nightcap and salvage a split with Minnesota.

Frank Rodriguez and three relievers limited the Yankees to five hits as the Twins took the opener.

Williams, who homered for New York’s only run in the first game, went 3 for 4 with another homer in the second.

White Sox 3, Angels 2 Chicago

Kevin Tapani scattered five hits in eight innings and Frank Thomas singled three times as Chicago beat California.

Tapani (8-4) walked one and retired nine straight batters in the middle innings. Roberto Hernandez pitched a scoreless ninth for his 22nd save.

Indians 4, Red Sox 0 Boston

Cleveland beat Boston for the 14th consecutive time, getting seven scoreless innings from Orel Hershiser.

Hershiser (8-4) struck out two and walked one, and Paul Shuey completed the shutout to snap the Indians’ four-game losing streak. Hershiser is 4-0 with a 0.66 ERA in his last four starts.

Tom Gordon (5-4) matched him through 5-2/3 innings before Eddie Murray and Manny Ramirez hit consecutive homers.

Brewers 5, Royals 3 Kansas City, Mo.

Greg Vaughn hit his 22nd homer as Milwaukee homered in its 14th straight game and beat Kansas City.

Milwaukee has won all five games played in Kansas City this season.

Vaughn connected for the seventh time this season against the Royals, homering into the water fountains in left field in the second.

Clearing the bases

Boston’s Mo Vaughn is batting .406 (26-64) in his last 18 games, including an 11-game hitting streak… . Scott Brosius returned to the Oakland lineup for the first time since May 4, when he broke his right forearm after being hit by a pitch from Kansas City’s Mark Gubicza… . Yankees coaches Don Zimmer and Willie Randolph were ejected after a ninth-inning argument in the second game, forcing Joe Torre to coach third base… . Danny Tartabull was a late scratch from the Chicago lineup with a bruised right tricep suffered Tuesday when he collided with Roberto Martin on a pop fly.
