Trout Returned To Mudgett

Mudgett Lake in southern Stevens County has been restocked with 6,500 rainbow trout fry, although no answers to last month’s mysterious fish kill were found, the Washington Fish and Wildlife Department reports.

Tests of water samples found nothing abnormal, said Madonna Luers, department spokeswoman. Biologists observed no ill effects to a dozen fish that were put in pens within the lake and monitored.

Few if any catchable-size trout are left in the 342-acre lake, which is east of Lake Roosevelt and about 2 miles south of Fruitland, Luers said.

The plant, which occurred last week, should provide fishing later this fall and next year. Mudgett is open through Oct. 31. Dead fish were first observed in the second week of May. The Northeast Tri-County Health District has lifted its advisory to avoid the lake, Luers said.

Volunteers needed to nurse birds

A free course in nursing injured birds will be taught at Farragut State Park Sunday.

The new Raptor Rehabilitation Center scheduled to open this summer at the park will need a stable of qualified volunteers to nurse injured hawks, eagles and owls, said Cynthia Langlitz, a park volunteer.

Specialists will conduct one-day workshop on feeding and handling birds at the center, which is being designed to hold birds long enough to recuperate before being released back into the wild.

To register, call (208) 683-2425, ext. 22, 25, or 27.

Lynx trapping on agenda

A statewide closure on trapping Canada lynx is among the proposals for Idaho’s 1996-97 seasons for taking upland game birds, furbearers, rabbits and crows. This and other proposals will be presented at an open-house meeting Thursday at Idaho Fish and Game Department regional headquarters, 2750 W. Kathleen Ave. in Coeur d’Alene.

Other changes, which will be presented from 4 to 7 p.m., generally affect southern Idaho, said department spokesman Dave Spicer. The department is considering shorter seasons for sage and sharp-tailed grouse.
