A Buoy From Boise: State To Provide 15 Percent In Flood Aid

People who gathered here for two days to discuss ways to prevent flood damage were buoyed by news from Idaho Gov. Phil Batt:

The state will provide 15 percent of the money needed for flood mitigation projects.

That will help match the 75 percent funding offered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the form of grants.

The state contribution will be a big benefit to agencies and local governments that will apply for grants, said FEMA mitigation specialist Sherryl Zahn.

“They’ll only have to come up with 10 percent,” she said.

About $3 million in federal grants will be available for flood-prevention measures. Ideas listed Thursday ranged from installing bigger road culverts to improving flood warning systems.

The ideas will be compiled into a report that will be available to the public by April.
