UW Rides Macculloch To Victory

Associated Press

Pac-10

Washington broke a 14-game losing streak against Arizona State as Todd MacCulloch’s 22 points and 20 rebounds led the Huskies to a 75-64 victory Thursday night in Seattle.

MacCulloch hit all 10 of his shots from the field, breaking Lars Hansen’s 21-year-old UW record of 92.8-percent shooting (13 of 14), based on a minimum of 10 shots taken. Both his points and rebounds were career highs.

Bryant Boston scored 14 points and Mark Sanford added 12 for the Huskies.

Jeremy Veal and Rodger Farrington scored 16 points and Ron Riley added 14 for Arizona State.

Leading by seven points just 4 minutes into the second half, MacCulloch began a 10-0 Washington run with a tip and Jason Hamilton ended it with a 3-pointer.

The Huskies led by as many as 20 points in the second half before Washington’s reserves allowed a number of easy Arizona State baskets in the game’s final 2 minutes.

In Corvallis, Ore., the 17th-ranked Bruins narrowly avoided what would have been one of college basketball’s biggest upsets of the season, holding off the Pac-10 doormat Beavers.

Toby Bailey scored eight points in the final 4:41, but missed 2 of 4 from the freethrow line to help the Beavers, losers of a school-record 14 in a row, nearly make up an 11-point deficit in the final minute.

Rob Williams of Oregon State made three 3-pointers in the final minute, but barely missed the one that mattered most. His shot from the corner at the buzzer for the game-winner was about an inch too long, rolled around the rim and dropped out.

UCLA struggled all night against the Beavers’ ball-control offense, but finally seemed to have the game in hand when Bailey’s breakaway layup made it 64-53 with 1:18 to play.

The victory gave UCLA coach Jim Harrick his eighth 20-victory season in as many years with the Bruins, only the third coach to accomplish that feat in major college basketball.
