Couple Plan Dairy Queen Double Dip

Ward Sanderson Staff Writer

Valleyites in search of a deep freeze or quick bite will have a couple more options: Two new Dairy Queen restaurants are planned here.

Clarion and Judy Bergland plan to build a new Dairy Queen on Pines Road just north of Valleyway Avenue. Construction has not yet started there, but Judy Bergland said the new restaurant should be open sometime next fall.

The Berglands have operated the Dairy Queen restaurant at Sprague and Bowdish for 14 years. That restaurant will close when the Berglands’ new Dairy Queen opens, Judy Bergland said.

The couple decided to move to a new building because their present site lacks a drive-through. The new restaurant will also have a larger seating capacity, up from 56 to 80, Bergland said.

The new restaurant will also offer a low-fat frozen yogurt bar.

The Berglands will own the new building. They now lease.

Staff at the existing business numbers 17 people. Bergland said as many as 13 new positions will be added once the move is complete.

Most of the new positions will be part time.

The second new Dairy Queen, at 15624 E. Sprague, is nearly finished and should open soon.

Developer Steve Pottratz could not be reached for comment, but county records state that the 2,892-square foot building, not including land, is valued at $175,862.

The restaurant is about a block east of Sullivan Road, near the Plant Land Nursery.

Valley restaurants offer delivery

Waiters on Wheels, a Spokane-based restaurant-meal delivery service, recently added five Valley eateries to its list of options.

Meals from the restaurants - Wine Stein’Z, Sizzler, Peking Palace, Case Da Or and Luigi’s - may be ordered for lunch delivery from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Dinner delivery may be ordered seven days a week from 4 to 9 p.m.

Waiters on Wheels delivers both to homes and businesses.

According to company literature, it typically takes an hour to receive deliveries.
