(From For the Record, Wednesday, March 6, 1996:) Rep. Tom Dorr voted for HJR12, the family rights amendment to the Idaho Constitution. His vote was misstated in Saturday’s Idaho Spokesman-Review. Also, Rep. Jeff Alltus voted against increasing the fuel tax.

Highlights from the past week in the Idaho Legislature

They said it

“People simply won’t afford to buy cars any more.” - Rep. Tom Dorr, R-Post Falls, on the gas tax increase. Dorr also said people would revert to “carts and buggies” rather than drive cars with the increased tax.

Votes

Here are some of the votes taken this week:

Family values: A joint resolution to add an amendment to the Idaho Constitution giving more authority to the traditional family passed the House 49-20 on Wednesday. North Idaho representatives in favor were Jeff Alltus, R-Coeur d’Alene; Hilde Kellogg, R-Post Falls; Don Pischner, R-Coeur d’Alene; and Marv Vandenberg, D-Coeur d’Alene. Reps. Tom Dorr, R-Post Falls; Chuck Cuddy, D-Orofino; June Judd, D-St. Maries; Wayne Meyer, R-Rathdrum; Carol Pietsch, D-Sandpoint; and Jim Stoicheff, D- Sandpoint, opposed the amendment.

Duck, duck, day care staffer: The Senate killed a bill to revise staff-to-child ratios at day care centers. Sens. Clyde Boatright, R-Rathdrum; Mary Lou Reed, D-Coeur d’Alene; and Tim Tucker, D-Porthill, voted against the bill. The only North Idaho senator supporting the bill was Sen. Gordon Crow, R-Hayden.

Gas tax passed: The House of Representatives voted 37-31 to raise fuel taxes by 4 cents. In favor: Cuddy, Kellogg, and Pietsch. Opposed: Dorr, Meyer, Pischner, Stoicheff, and Vandenberg.
