Rainier Has A Ball Call

You can’t watch the Rainier Mountaineers without asking: What is the purpose of that mind-numbing chant, “Ball! Ball! Ball! Ball!”?

When the Mountaineers’ opponents are in possession of the ball, Rainier’s bench players chant incessantly, or at least until Rainier gets the ball back.

After 90 minutes, even the most hardened fans can have their nerves frayed.

“I started having them do that earlier this season after we lost a road game to Toutle Lake,” Rainier coach Jack Mehn said. “They handled us pretty well, and it just seemed like there wasn’t a lot of enthusiasm on our part.

“This is a way to get the bench into the game, and also a way for the players on the court to get some enthusiasm going.”
