WSU Groundbreaking Set Today

A groundbreaking ceremony for the start of construction on a $10 million, 45,800 square-foot addition to Washington State’s Bohler Gym will be held in Pullman today at noon in the Bohler Gym parking lot.

The four-story addition, which WSU officials are hoping to complete during the fall of 1997, will feature a two-story, state-of-the-art weight room and conditioning center.

It also will have offices for athletic department personnel, meeting rooms and locker room facilities.

University president Sam Smith, Cougars athletic director Rick Dickson and several other dignitaries are expected to attend today’s ceremony. Construction is expected to begin in April.

Funds for the project, according to WSU senior associate athletic director Marcia Saneholtz, have been approved by the state Legislature in order to help the university comply with court-ordered gender equity.

WSU is also in the middle of a massive fund-raising drive to help furnish the new addition, which is the first major on-campus facilities improvement since 1979 when Martin Stadium was renovated and the track and baseball stadiums were relocated.
