Whale Watching Boat Capsizes

Compiled From Wire Services

A whale watching boat overturned off New Zealand’s South Island on Saturday and a Taiwanese tourist trapped in the hull died. Twenty-eight other people were rescued from the sea.

Police said five people were taken to the hospital suffering from shock and hypothermia, but none was in serious condition.

Police and local residents said the sea was calm and only a light breeze was blowing when the boat suddenly turned over in a popular whale-watching area about three miles off township of Kaikoura. Other boats in the vicinity and a rescue helicopter arrived at the scene quickly.

Police said the dead woman was 29-year-old Mei Huei Chen.
